Integration and use of information and communication technologies among dental students

Abstract
Purpose: This study evaluated the integration and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) among dental students at Casablanca Hassan II University.Methods: A total of 586 dental students from the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth years were asked to complete a questionnaire over the academic year 2017-2018. The questionnaire consisted of 28 multiple-choice questions and 4 short answer questions. Results: 21% had access to computers at the university while 98% had access at home. The majority of students (97%) had access to the Internet and almost all dental students used it to study dentistry. A significant difference was found between clinical and preclinical students in the use of computers or equivalent for academic activities. While clinical students used word processing (p<0.01) and presentation (p<0.05) for their studies, more preclinical students used Medline (p<.001).Conclusion: Casablanca dental students had access to ICT resources and some computer and internet skills, but they require more structured training and integration of ICT into their dental curricula. Further research is needed to assess the ICT competencies of dental teachers, to identify their needs in terms of use, and determine their attitudes towards the possible role and modalities of training they could receive in this area.
