Outcome characteristic of geriatric patient with ischemic stroke in Sanglah General Hospital Denpasar 2018-2019

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Incidence and outcomes after stroke are highly influenced by increased age. There are very few studies showing the characteristics of ischemic stroke in the elderly. This study aims to determine the incidence rate and outcome characteristics of geriatric patients with ischemic stroke.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study using data taken from the medical reports. The sample of this study is ischemic stroke patients in the geriatric group (over 60 years old) in Sanglah General Hospital from July 2018 to June 2019. Samples were collected by a nonrandom sampling method. The severity of stroke was assessed using the NIHSS score.
RESULTS: The stroke outcomes are divided into two groups, the survival and the death group. The proportion of males is dominating in both groups. Most of the patients have a moderate NIHSS score. The young elderly have a better survival outcome. Small vessel occlusion is the most common etiology in the survival group, while large vessel atherosclerosis is the common cause in the death group.
CONCLUSION: Age is a significant, nonmodified risk factor of stroke. Elderly patients with ischemic stroke have poorer outcomes compared to younger patients.
