Introduction.
Inguinal hernia is among the most commonly expressed diseases globally; reaching an estimated volume of more than 20 million surgeries annually. Accordingly surgical repair of inguinal hernia is amid the most frequently conducted surgical operations [1,2].
There is a big variability regarding the rates of bilateral inguinal hernia especially in males; it is estimated that between 8 and 30% of hernia patients have bilateral hernias globally and, in the USA, ranging (5% -22%), which is related to variable yardsticks of detection, both clinically and intra-operatively during repair of contralateral side hernia. Furthermore, the incidence of ipsilateral occult direct and indirect inguinal hernias is 4.11% and 2.45% respectively. Recent management strategy of bilateral inguinal hernia comprises simultaneous repair avoiding the induced tension in suture line potentiating recurrence rates caused by sequential repair [3-5].
Management strategies of symptomatic, clinically occult, radiologically evident inguinal hernias had categorized surgeons’ modalities concerning management into; surgical intervention (36%), conservative management seeking further investigations (31%) and a mixed approach computing the pair conservative or surgical management (30%) [6].
Case report.
This paper describes a case study of a 60-year-old male patient with bilateral inguinal hernias who underwent simultaneous bilateral inguinal hernioplasty using the Liechtenstein technique with mesh implants fixed by herniostaplers, which reduced operative time, postoperative complications, and cost, while also eliminating the risk of missing an occult hernia.
Conclusion.
Performing bilateral inguinal hernia repair in the same setting reduced operative time, postoperative complications, and cost, and eliminated the risk of missing an occult hernia.
