Cochlear Implant in Fraternal Twins: a Case Report

Eka Putra Setiawan, Ira Sugihartana.

Abstract
Introduction: Twin pregnancies can cause various neonate complications, such as the risk of hearing loss. Early detection and identification of risk factors for hearing loss are essential for initial treatment. The cochlear implant is one of the treatments for children with severe and profound hearing loss. Case Report: Two 3-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, were reported with a speech delay complaint. After further examination, both were diagnosed with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. In both patients, a one-sided cochlear implant was placed. The boy underwent a cochlear implant one month earlier than the girl. Discussion: Treatment of sensorineural hearing loss depends on the severity. In profound sensorineural, a cochlear implant is the best way to provide appropriate auditory perception. There are different results of post cochlear implant evaluation, even though both patients received the same treatment.

Key words: sensorineural hearing loss, cochlear implant, Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale
