Medicolegal autopsy in COVID positive bodies: Issues and rights of the deceased and family in India

Abstract
The Covid pandemic has affected millions all over India, causing misery and innumerable deaths. Among these, a few cases have been sent for medicolegal autopsy. Covid death definition and the unnatural deaths being sent for autopsy in which Covid is incidental has to be known. A death certificate is to be issued in the medicolegal autopsy as before. Still, a committee has been made in each district in case the family is unsatisfied with the cause. The dead in Covid must be allowed dignity along with their family members as mentioned under Article 21 of the Constitution and relevant IPC sections. Compensation has been made available to the kin of Covid's death, which is relevant for those who committed suicide within 30 days of being diagnosed. The mental health of the surviving family members must be given priority.
