Abstract
Background: Raised serum sodium, low levels of serum calcium and increased serum glucose have been implicated in the development of cataracts. Our study compares the aqueous levels of sodium, calcium and glucose among patients with different stages of cataracts. Aims and Objective: 1) To compare the aqueous levels of sodium, calcium and glucose among patients with different stages of cataract – Immature cataract, Mature cataract and Nuclear Cataract. 2) To compare the serum levels of sodium, calcium and glucose among patients with different stages of cataract – Immature cataract, Mature cataract and Nuclear Cataract. Methods: 1) Patients were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 – Immature cataract, Group 2 - Mature Cataract, Group 3 - Nuclear Cataract. 2) Serum and Aqueous humour was collected intra-operatively and sent for biochemical analysis. Results: 1) In immature cataracts: The sodium concentration in aqueous humour was slightly higher than normal, i.e., 147.8 mEq/L. The calcium level was also within normal limits was 5.6 mg/dl. The mean glucose concentration in aqueous humour was 60.4 mg/dl, higher than the normal limits. 2) In mature cataracts, sodium's mean aqueous concentration was higher than normal limits. The mean aqueous concentration of calcium levels was also within normal limits. But the glucose level was less than normal. 3) In nuclear cataracts: The mean aqueous concentration of sodium and calcium was within normal limits. The glucose level was much higher than normal-86.5 mg/dl. Conclusion: Concerning aqueous, the level of sodium and glucose was higher than normal in immature cataracts, and the mean aqueous concentration of calcium was higher in mature cataracts. The mean aqueous levels of sodium, calcium and glucose were all raised in nuclear cataracts.

Key words: Aqueous Glucose, Aqueous calcium, Aqueous Sodium
