A rare benign disorder of the palatine tonsils: case report and review of the literature

Elvir Zvrko, Ljiljana Vuckovic.

Abstract
Lymphoid papillary hyperplasia (LPH) of the tonsil is a rare abnormality with clinical features of both a benign (papillomas) and a malignant (carcinoma) tumour. The aetiology and pathogenesis of this disorder are uncertain due to the limited number of cases. We report a case of this rare condition in a 35-year-old male. Clinical examination showed hypertrophied right palatine tonsil covered by multiple papillary structures of various sizes. Tonsillectomy was performed under general anaesthesia. Histopathological examination of the tonsil showed papillary configuration covered by stratified squamous epithelium on the surface and revealed lymphoid papillary hyperplasia. LPH is rarely reported especially among the caucasian race. It is a benign, probably non-neoplastic, lesion, and can easily be cured by tonsillectomy.

Key words: Tonsils, Lymphoid papillary hyperplasia, Papilloma, Tonsillectomy
