Planning immediate denture rehabilitation in patient influenced by elder maltreatment

Abstract
The elderly population is growing fast; with it, the challenges of their health care are immense. Those suffering from Elder abuse and neglect (EAN) poses extra difficulty in diagnosing underlying influence since their neglect is most commonly done by their family members. Depression is common in such cases, which has been shown to influence the treatment compliance of both medical and dental treatments. We present a case of an elderly patient who had started neglecting his oral hygiene after having been neglected by his family members after his spouse's expiry. A two-stage immediate denture (posterior transitional) was designed to minimize the impact of multiple extractions and lack of self/family care during healing. The occlusal plane was corrected since the teeth were supraerupted. The posterior transitional denture was tried and later replaced with anterior teeth. A surgical template buffered the discrepancy between planned cast modifications and actual bone loss during extraction. The patient and his family caretaker were both educated regarding the long term maintenance of the immediate denture. The patient reported a moderate satisfaction level despite a well functioning prosthesis.
