Emergency Chest Trauma Guide: Essential First Aid for Non-Medical Responders

George Kesov, Nina Stoyanova, Ivan Inkov.

Abstract
Chest injuries can range from mild contusions to life-threatening conditions such as pneumothorax and flail chest. Non-medical professionals, including first responders and laypersons, often encounter these injuries in emergency situations, requiring immediate recognition and basic intervention before medical assistance arrives. This guideline provides a structured approach to identifying different types of chest trauma, assessing symptoms, and implementing crucial first-aid measures. It emphasizes pain management, monitoring for complications, and knowing when to seek urgent medical care. By equipping non-medical individuals with fundamental knowledge, this guide aims to enhance early interventions, minimize complications, and improve patient outcomes.

Key words: Chest trauma, first aid, rib fracture, pneumothorax, flail chest, emergency response, pain management, respiratory distress, non-medical professionals, trauma assessment
