A Guide for Non-Medical Professionals: Assessing and Managing Eye Injuries

George Kesov, Nina Stoyanova.

Abstract
Eye injuries are common and can range from minor irritations to severe conditions that may result in permanent vision loss. Non-medical professionals, such as first responders, caregivers, and bystanders, often play a crucial role in the initial assessment and management of these injuries. This guide outlines the methods non-medical professionals should follow to assess and manage common eye injuries effectively, providing practical steps for vision testing, pupil examination, and identifying foreign bodies. The guide also details when to seek medical attention, the appropriate treatments for specific injuries, and what actions should be avoided to prevent further harm. By equipping non-medical professionals with this knowledge, the risk of long-term damage can be minimized, and timely medical intervention can be facilitated.

Key words: Eye injuries, non-medical professionals, first aid, corneal abrasion, foreign body removal, pupil examination, chemical burns, vision testing, fluorescein staining, eye trauma, emergency care, ocular injury management
