Brachial plexopathy in a case of carcinoma breast: A rare presentation

Sujata Singla, Kusum Meena, Sumeet Aggarwal.

Abstract
Brachial plexopathy in breast cancer patients can be due to two main causes; one being tumour infiltration and other being radiation therapy. In literature a lot has been written about radiation induced brachial plexopathy. Primary and secondary tumours of brachial plexus are the most common cause of brachial plexopathy. Plexus neuropathies usually observed in patients with breast cancer at variable time interval following surgery; cause being recurrence and adjuvant radiotherapy; attributing factor being radiation induced fibrosis. We are reporting a case of 65 years old lady of carcinoma breast who presented with brachial plexopathy at initial presentation. The purpose of reporting this case is to put emphasis on significant morbidity produced by involvement of nerves of brachial plexus in patients with carcinoma breast in absence of surgery and radiotherapy leading to diagnostic dilemma, its irreversible nature and its challenging management.

Key words: Brachial plexopathy, Carcinoma breast, Gabapentin
