Atherogenic Index of Plasma as A Novel Predictor of Severity in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Ellen Ferlita Tirtana.

Abstract
Stroke is a global health problem which serves as a common cause of disability and mortality. Atherosclerosis is a common cause of stroke and dyslipidemia is an important risk factor causing atherosclerosis. Some blood lipid parameters are used to evaluate the risk of stroke, one of them is Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP). AIP is a strong biomarker for dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. According to some studies, the value of AIP is directly proportional to the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. AIP indirectly reflects the size of sdLDL particle which can easily slip into the wall of blood vessels and form atherosclerotic plaque. The use of triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) values in this ratio reflects multiple interactions of lipoprotein metabolism and it is useful to predict plasma atherogenicity. This literature review is made to give insight that according to some studies, AIP is a lipid marker which can be used as a predictor of severity of acute ischemic stroke.

Key words: AIP, lipid profile, ischemic stroke
