Awareness and knowledge of rheumatology subspecialty among clinical students in a Nigerian medical school

Abstract
Background: Rheumatology is a dynamic medical speciality with over 200 diagnoses and syndromes. There has been little or no emphasis on emphasis on rheumatology education in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa despite the increasing burden of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases globally.

Objectives: The study aims to assess the awareness of clinical students to rheumatology as a subspecialty, and also to evaluate their knowledge of rheumatology.
Methods: Anonymized self-administered questionnaire to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of rheumatology speciality was administered to 200 clinical students from fourth to final year in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, South-south Nigeria after informed consent. The data were analyzed using the SPSS version 22 and the level of significance was set at P<0.05.

Results: The response rate was 186 (93%) with 98 (52.7) males. Though 70.4% of the respondents affirmed to be aware of rheumatology speciality, their level of awareness was poor as over 70% of the respondent scored less than 5 out of 10 points on a scale. Information regarding rheumatology was acquired largely from lectures. The class level of the respondents correlates significantly to the awareness and knowledge of rheumatology (p < 0.001).

Conclusions: The findings of the study showed inadequate knowledge and level of awareness of rheumatology speciality among the students. However, the level of knowledge and awareness correlated with increasing class level.
